MR MANN (Work in Progress)

MR MANN
Mr Mann just landed
For talks in Tel Aviv,
To speak to leaders trying out their new bombs in the streets.
And Mr Mann is adamant
That he’s seen all he could see:
He read the news of Palestine
From south Los Angeles.
But he’s never seen a body
With no head outside his door,
And you can’t have “extra cream with that”
When you’re living in a war.
Mr Mann read something that
Says the earth is getting warm:
“We’re living life too easy,
Dying with the heating on.”
And Mr Mann is worried
That he’s not doing his bit,
But he blames the corporations,
‘Cause it’s them that’s doing it.
And though he read it on his phone,
Made of blood from foreign kids,
If he can’t access the articles,
What can he do about it?
Mr Mann’s been trimming
All the hairs upon his chest,
But pays for hair growth starter kits
So his beard can look its best.
Cause Mr Mann was told that
Ladies like a guy who cares:
They want one who is rugged,
But who has clean underwear.
And though he met her in a bar
And she said she didn’t drink,
When he told her he was stopping too.
She said she had to think.
Mr Mann just handed
Human rights to everyone:
Equal opportunities
For rich men and their sons.
But Mr Mann got canceled when
They found a teenage tweet.
They said he didn’t post a plain black box
When poor George died out on the street.
And when he said he “didn’t know”
That he was “too young at the time”
The hipsters in their Carhartt jeans
Said he might have crossed a line.

A lot to unpack in this poem,
A lot to unpack in this poem, apart from how well it reads it impresses with its message and the satirical take on contemporary attitudes; and again I find the understated half rhymes add to its easy reading. Another good one Max.

Interesting that you say this
Interesting that you say this is a 'work in progress' (I love getting a glimpse of those, it's fascinating to see how writers' minds work and develop themes) because I feel there's both great ideas and clever writing in this, but for me it's not quite gelling as a whole piece, the last two stanzas seemed to lose a bit of momentum. I'll be interested to see it as it progresses!
