THE RIDE ON 'THE GIANT WHEEL'
Today is something special for us. My cousins Vicky, Nelly and I are
going to the Fair. The most interesting part is that we are going there
for a ride on the giant wheel.
Vicky had been permitted to use his father's car to take us to the
fair. It was a fifteen minutes drive to the fair. Having parked the car
we moved on towards the giant wheel. It was going to be Nelly's first
ride on a giant wheel. Vicky got the tickets and we waited in the queue
for our turn. Nelly caught hold of my hand and it was ice cold. I could
know that fear was creeping into her at the sight of the wheel itself.
She asked me, "I have sat on a merry go round but this is going to be
my first experience on this. I am feeling so uneasy."
I consoled her saying, "You will feel nothing different in this giant
wheel ride. This will take you up and then bring you down and you will
simply enjoy it." Then I thought of my first ride on a giant wheel. I
had cold lumps in my chest and butterflies in my stomach. I had yelled
when the wheel came down and had held my dad's hand so firmly that my
nails had made marks where I had caught hold of. But after the first
chance I never felt the same again but enjoyed it
Vicky said, "Nelly, I hope you will be comfortable to go for this ride.
If you feel frightened I am there to help you out. Once you get seated
you will go round and round in the air." Nelly's face had gone pale on
hearing Vicky's words yet she did not want to stride back. Mustering
courage she told Vicky that she was ready to sit on the giant
wheel.
Our turn came and I and Nelly shared a double-seat. The wheel started
moving up. Nelly closed her eyes and gripped my hand very firmly. I
don't know what was happening to her but I could feel that she was
terribly frightened. When the giant wheel started coming down suddenly
she shouted loudly. I could hear shouts from some others too. Shouting
does help to relieve the fear and this is a common sight. Suddenly I
found Nelly's legs were shivering and then I told her to close her eyes
and talk loudly to me. She spoke out loudly and also laughed and
shouted but the shivering seemed so automatic and it did not stop till
the wheel came to a halt.
It took some time for Nelly to get down. She told Vicky, "My legs are
still shivering, I am feeling a bit uncomfortable."
To come out of this situation, Vicky took us to a food stall and
ordered some pastry and ice-creams. We ate our food and enjoyed the
ice-cream. Then Nelly spoke out, "This is my first and last giant wheel
ride. What a time I had sitting on that."
It was then that I felt Nelly's fear had totally spoilt my ride and I
could not enjoy it at. We bought a few things from a stall and we were
on our way back. I enjoyed today's outing and it was such a wonderful
day for the three of us.
