Prologue:
In India Circus groups are fast vanishing. These days there are very
few circus groups left to present their shows. Owners are disbanding
their circus groups for the rising cost of maintenance as compared to
the slash in their income. Also other modes of entertainment has
ushered in today's world that fancies the new generation. But after
all
'a circus is a circus' and very soon, generations to come, will only
hear about the circus or read about it. Circus is a live fun fair and
show of feats. So in remembrance of this fast vanishing 'Circus' my
writing will be a remembrance of my thoughts.
This story thought has been generated in me after my last witness of a
circus in the year 1993. This is completely a work of fiction.
PART - I
'THE GREAT INDIAN CIRCUS' COMES TO TOWN.
These were the hot days of the month of May. The Indian summer had
crept in as usual.
Days were hot and dry. It was during these days that a long colourful
procession entered the town of Sonarpur. The people came out of their
houses to see what it was. Alas! It was a circus party that had come to
the town for their great show.
As the colourful caravan entered Sonarpur, the people ------- old and
young alike were very pleased. Children started dreaming about that day
when they would go to see the Show. The children made themselves happy
at the thought of the clowns and were very excited to see the different
animals.
It was 'THE GREAT INDIAN CIRCUS'. The circus tent was put up at the
place allotted to them by the town authorities of Sonarpur. Close by
ran a river which would be of much help to all the people and the
animals of the circus party. Although it was not a very big Circus yet
it cannot be said to be a very small one either.
The owner of 'THE GREAT INDIAN CIRCUS' was Mr. Raman. He was the
ringmaster. Raman was a very jolly, gay and easy-going man. He was very
tall, with a longish face and a sharp nose and always wore boots with
high heels, which made him look taller. He always wore a tall hat on
his head, which was most of the time tilted to the left. By the tilt of
his hat every member of the circus party could know his mood. When it
was tilted to the left, he was happy and gay. When its position was
straight on his head it meant that he was worried over something; and
when it was tilted to the right he would take the whip in his hand and
seem to be very angry. But his anger was short lived and very soon he
would cool down and be the same gay and easygoing man again.
The circus tents were put up and the ring made for the Show. Every
thing was now ready for the Show to begin. The weather was fine and
favourable. Announcements were being made by the circus people, all
over the town of Sonarpur through a loud speaker and this they did by
going about in their own colourful van. They even distributed pamphlets
and pasted colourful posters on walls all over the town. At last the
day came for the Show to begin.
