Desmond sat and listened to his mother go on. She was talking about
his loon of a grandmother, who was a spiritualist, among other things.
His mother was telling him that Iris, his gran, had been visited by one
of their relatives, his mum's brother, and that he had told Iris that
Desmond would get his black belt.
Desmond quit karate three weeks later, he was a brown belt, third Que,
his next belt was black and he was due to take the test in a few weeks
time but Desmond found the whole spirit uncle thing a bit too
weird.
As time went on and Desmond got older he would smile to himself about
his predicted black belt in karate and even became obsessive about this
making him immortal, on the basis that the dead could not be wrong, and
as long as he didn't obtain his black belt in karate he could not
die.
Twenty years later Desmond was doing well, he was settled with his long
term girlfriend, Sally. He had a job he enjoyed and in general his life
was just right. That night he was due to go to his mates fancy dress
party, his girlfriend Sally was bringing his costume home with her from
work. The theme of the party was cartoon characters, and Desmond was
getting excited as to what Sally would bring him home.
"Hello, it's me!" Shouted Sally as she walked through the door. Desmond
greeted her with a kiss, "tonight Matthew I going to be&;#8230;" and
Sally pulled out a pink panther suit. "Nice one." Said Desmond, "I
can't wait to see you in that or rather get you home in that." Sally
gave him a cheeky grin and winked."What have you got me?" Asked
Desmond. That's when Sally produced the HongKong Fuey outfit. "Great"
said Desmond and they both went upstairs to get ready.
They got into the car in their outfits and made ready to travel the
twenty minutes journey to Michael's house, who was throwing the party.
After a few minutes Sally turned to Desmond and said, "you know, I was
a bit doubtful whether to get you that outfit, I know how you feel
about karate black belts." Desmond hadn't realised until that moment
the significance of what he was wearing, suddenly he panicked, he
swerved on the dual carriageway. He began to sweat in the costume, "Are
you alright?" asked Sally smiling.
Desmond looked in the rear view mirror, there was a ghostly presence.
He recognised him from the pictures his mum had shown him, it was his
Uncle, he stared in disbelief.
"Look out." Shouted Sally. Desmond looked back through the windscreen,
he had wandered into the path of an oncoming truck. Then there was
silence.
The bodies of the Pink Panther and HongKong Fuey lay on the road
comically mangled by the weight of the truck. Desmond's face was
twisted with terror in death, his Uncle had been right Desmond did get
his black belt eventually.
