Pigeon

Looking at me through hazy eyes
Wondering if what you see is real
Bobbing your head to and fro
You can't stand still for an instant
The metallic green and purple of your throat
Stripes running across the feathers of your wing
Damn, you must weigh twelve pounds...what do you eat?
The seed is right there in the feeder, come and get it
Or are you afraid of me sitting on my floor, writing?
You look so comfortable resting in the pine
I wish the limb would hold me there as well
Look at me I say - look at me and stare!
Why can't you keep your glare for more than a second?
You just sit there watching the world around you
Looking so peaceful without a care to be thought
I know, I know - maybe one day . . .
I look up and you are gone, no longer there
The limb back at its original place
Fly away dear bird, fly away from here
Maybe one day I will fly away with you.
