The Waters of Time

A sudden falling into water.
The sharp flashing splash
that echoes into falling rain,
and ripples that grow
outwards from disturbance,
like rumours of disaster.
Then silence, except slow
lapping at the edges,
as the day reforms around us
and the river goes on
about its own secrets,
down to where it is taken
deep into the unfathomable sea.
