Please forgive if, for this one, I sound a little coy,
Because it's largely for the ladies, and I am but a boy.
So please do pay attention (although I will not set a test)
'Cos I need to talk to you about cancer of the breast.
Of all the many cancers this one is most prevalent,
But caught in time it can be stopped from becoming more malevolent.
Be alert, know your body become more breast aware,
Pay heed to the good advice that I'm going to share.
Everyone has different breasts (and all the better for it!)
So, if you notice something strange you better not ignore it.
You're the one that knows your breasts, their texture shape and size,
Colouration, lumps and bumps, so don't let them take you by surprise.
Have a look in the mirror, when you first inspect,
Make sure all looks just like you would expect.
Then warm your hands, and firm and gentle feel around the zone,
And run your fingers to the armpits and the collarbone.
The changes that you're looking for as you do this thing
Are size, shape, discolouration or lumps and thickening.
Rashes, redness, or other strange new stipples,
Changes in position of, or discharge from your nipples.
If you have new aches and pains that will not dissipate,
Then you should call your GP - do not hesitate.
Many lumps are harmless, really quite benign,
But they should all be tested for your piece of mind.
If you're over 50 but under 71,
Then once every three years screening will be done,
I can't pretend it's comfortable or won't hurt a little bit,
But screening does save many lives, so you know you should do it.
Earlier detection improves your chance at life,
As does proper treatment: radiation, drugs or knife.
So, Ladies listen closely to my last request
Please just take a moment to scrutinize your breast.
