Defying Mirrors
Chapter One
“I’m not Claire”
Those were the words she whispered through the dry lips, swollen and pleading for water.
She didn’t know if she could yell any louder. There was nothing left of her voice but a broken whisper, a flaming torch burning the back of her throat.
He hadn’t broken her yet, but she was fragile, her mind and body pushed to cliff’s edge where one last rock would bring what was left of her life crashing down.
Rachel had experienced hell before. The difference this time was that she had been sent straight into the care of the Devil himself and this time, she knew, mercy was out of the question.
She lay still where he left her, cold and bruised against the hard slab of the stone floor. Her body ached and she was no longer aware of which bones were broken and which bones were not. Even if she wanted to move, she was not capable of doing so. She felt as though the floor beneath her was the only thing holding her body together.
Her dark hair partially covered her face, long strands clinging to the dried blood either side of her jaw. The green eyes which were once intense were now staring ahead at the bolted door, looking but not really seeing. Rope bound her wrists tightly behind her, maximizing pain her limp hands.
Unconsciousness took over her once more and exhausted, she allowed herself to be pulled into comforting darkness, momentarily forgetting the pain.
Sixteen hours later, he returned.
One hour later, he left.
The devil shows no mercy and as the door trapped her inside once more she only had the strength left to whisper the same three words.
