The Road Is Wider Than It's Long

I saw a shadow lady,
Calling up the wind
And a Spanish boy
who called out the fishes for to swim
Scarlet at the fairgound said:
"You joskins got it wrong."
The road is wider than it's long.
I was searching for the searchers
In my father's telling eyes
And I followed the old path
In the golden morning light
My love she turned and left me
With all I've left, a song.
The road is wider than it's long.
I heard tell tale of migrants
In a mire of misery
In a corner of a wishing well
Where a stairway used to be
Written in a voice that pertains to pass it on.
The road is wider than it's long.
I read of hatted suitors
Who lied to tell your truth
Denying their allegiance to the
Death of Sister Ruth
Paying off the border gaurds
Who don't know their right from wrong
The road is wider than it's long.
I overheard a dentist
Who stood reciting gold
Retelling his lost cargo
That love can never hold
For it burns the heart of captains
Who fall into its metal sun
The road is wider than it's long.
I read the markings of tracks
Of an animal of tears
Who had been living next door
In disguise for years
Who cried I would have come out dancing
But had nothing to put on.
The road is wider than it's long.
I saw a Doctor dressed to kill
With a dishonest hand to play
Stating there's only one diagnosis
It's ;ways been that way
You can sell it with a light touch
But you know when the light goes on.
The road is wider than it's long.
I saw a film of a ghost
Who forgot his worn out lines
So he made up someone else's
And began his pantomime
For no one in particular
But a voice said
"That's the bomb!"
The road is wider than it's long.
A picked up a picture of a shadow
Of a girl whose now grown up
And someone gives out prizes
For the punter with least luck
And he winds down his window
Saying look around before it's gone.
The road is wider than it's long.
