I saw you in a flower,
The brightest, sunniest one there is.
I saw you in a landscape,
So green, so yellow, so ever blue,
With red-rooved houses and well-tilled soils,
I saw your world in vivid hue.
You are to me the painter's art,
The genie in the lamp.
When trouble came it caused you pain,
But growing ever stronger
In the crucible of your art,
The broken colours formed a star.
And in your rainbow, Vincent,
Are a million tears of hope.
