I opened up my timetable and had a look. The days of the week were written at the top, the lessons underneath each day, and the time at which we were to have the lesson plus the teacher we were to have them with and what room it was in. Today was Tuesday, which meant that the first lesson of the day was Types Of Fire with Miss Burnout, which meant I didn’t have far to go.
Miss Burnout was smiling at us. “Your first lesson of the day is in here with me. Which makes it convenient, don’t you think?” She smiled.
She walked over to the blackboard, and wrote up “TYPES OF FIRE”.
“Now, who can tell me what different types of fire there are?”
From across the room, Singe’s hand shot straight up.
Miss Burnout acknowledged her.
“Well first of all, there’s the blue flame. Pretty to look at, but so hot it can burn you straightaway. Usually found on cookers. And then there’s the yellow flame…” Singe went on in this fashion for ten minutes, that in the end, Miss Burnout had to told her to be quiet.
She looked at all of us. “I am going to hand out an exercise book and a pen for each of you. On the front, state your name, and that you are first years, my name and the name of this lesson. Inside, you will copy down what I am about to write up on the blackboard, which is pretty much everything Miss Singe has said.”
The whole lesson went on like this, with all of us writing down everything off the blackboard, which was the names of different fires and how hot they can be. By the end of the lesson, I had more or less chewed off the end of my pen, I was that bored. It was an hour lesson but it felt more like one day. By the end, I was glad to get out of there.
“What our next lesson?” Ginger asked, outside the classroom.
“Fire-making, with Miss Firebell in room ten, upstairs,” answered Flame.
“Oh, great,” said her sister. “We learn about fires, now we have to make them?”
Fire-making wasn’t that bad. We sat two at a table; I sat with Red Star and Miss Firebell gave us a list of instructions on how to make a blue flame. We were ten minutes into the lesson when the table in front of Red Star and me exploded and Smoke and Ruby, who were sat at the table in front of us turned around and revealed their eyebrows had been burned off.
