“Now wait just a minute,” Mum demanded. “You can’t just send us to a human pound to be given a lethal injection.”
“Yes, we can,” Pongo answered. “Especially if you’re not carrying a leash or collar.”
Mum pulled a face. “No I mean, there is no human pound, is there!”
Pongo frowned. “What do you mean?”
“Well, I’m still not convinced you’re a real dog,” Mum replied. “I still reckon you’re Steve and Linney dressed up.”
“Who are these people?” Pongo’s wife asked.
“My kids’ father and his new girlfriend. I was dropping my kids off at their house for the weekend.”
“I think it’s funny how humans are allowed to drive now,” Pongo said.
“They’re not!” His wife snarled. “They’ve obviously mentally unstable and escaped from the pound. They’re probably being hunted as we speak.”
“Where we come from, there is no pound that humans go to,” Mum said.
“Why, where do you come from?” Pongo asked.
“Well, not Pet Worth,” Mum replied. “We live all the way down in Cornwall, and there are no talking dogs or human pounds there, I can tell you!”
“Of course there are,” Pongo said. “It’s all over the world. What are you talking about?”
“What are you talking about?” Mum demanded. “Last time I looked, dogs couldn’t talk.”
“All right, stop arguing,” Pongo’s wife ordered. “I should be ringing the pound right now and asking if they’re missing three patients.”
“Well, you’ll be wasting your time,” Mum told her. “Because the pound aren’t missing three patients, because the pound doesn’t exist.” She gave Pongo and his wife a funny look. “Ok, so you’re not Steve and Linney. You’re obviously two of their friends dressed up. Or maybe I’m dreaming.”
It was at that moment that I started to feel funny. I started to feel dizzy; everything started to fade away.
“Natalie?” Mum asked. “What’s the matter? Are you feeling all right? Natalie? NATALIE?”
It was then that everything disappeared. Mum, my brother, the two dogs.
I was lying in my bed in my own bedroom in my home. It had all been a dream, and Mum was in my room, shaking me awake.
“Ah, you’re awake at last,” she smiled. “Come on. Get up Sweetie.”
I was disgusted. “It’s half term, Mum,” I said. “I don’t have to get up early today.”
“You do today. I’m driving you all the way to Pet Worth. Don’t you remember? You and your brother are going to stay with Steve and Linny for a while.”
Pet Worth? “Oh no, Mum! Do we have to?” I remembered my dream, and in my half asleep state, I was freaked out.
“What’s the matter, Natalie? You’ve gone a funny colour.”
“We can’t go to Pet Worth Mum. The cats and dogs there can talk, and they keep humans in a pound.”
“Don’t be silly Natalie. You was obviously dreaming. Now get up and have a shower. I’ll go downstairs and fix your breakfast.”
As Mum got up to go out, I started shrieking.
Mum was wearing a fluffy brown tail.
