I have an iron bound chest
Safe and strong
Forged with skill
Tight and secure.

It holds my heart.

Safe from harm and hurt
Safe from emotion
Safe from pain
Safe from me.

Like
A great painting in a vault
A great treasure in a bank
A great car in a museum
Held safe and lifeless

How can I break the bonds I have made?
How can I find my heart again?

When I approach the truth
The grief and sorrow seep out
Weeping through the cracks in my armour.

What pain have I in store
Waiting to be released
Waiting to overwhelm me?

If I should find my heart
Will I lose my sanity?

Will I turn the sadness to joy
The base metal to gold?

Where can I find my alchemy
How may I wreak this change?

Where can I find help…

I wrote this some years ago. I'm happy to say that I have now opened the chest, following an Experience Week at the Findhorn Foundation. I would recommend this experience to everyone!

I can relate to much of this Hourhouse, I'm so glad you found the strength to come out the other side, there are times when it feels impossible. I admire your bravery in looking for change. ;}

New Hourhouse Me same as shoe, but how great you can put all into poem. And so pleased the iron chest, is open for everything, tha will come to you. We ahve to suffer soemtimes, help and show other's empathy. Don't you think. I meet someone most days now in so many situations. all the best. Future. julie x

Thanks julie and Highhat. A lot of my poems are very personal and were written in times of high emotion for me alone. Publishing them is a bit like stripping off in public, but having said that, we're all pretty much the same inside our clothes and inside ourselves. Anyway, as a leo, I can't resist showing off ;o)

I like this very much. Could i suggest a tiny, tiny tweek? rather than the word "like" on its own, how about putting like at the start of the three subsequent lines, to match the "safe" above. Thank you for sharing something so personal and I'm pleased the box is now open. Kheldar :--)

Thanks for the comments and suggestions Kheldar. This is what it is, written at the time, and I am loathe to change a word of it and spoil the authenticity of that moment. Your suggestions are welcomed though.

It seems my optimism over a decade ago was but a brief flash of light in the darkness, which has now closed in and enveloped me again.
The chest never went away - it may have been better illuminated, but it's still there, as big, heavy, rusty and leaky as ever, dragging me down into the derkness with it. Help seems as far away as ever...
