DARKNESS AT NOON

Earth is with the wanderer wherever he may rest;
Whatever land he settles in her love for him is blessed;
But he has cursed himself with war, and weapons forged in fire;
And he has dug his grave with bombs and made his home a pyre.
- -Heaven high and man below, the world created fair -
- -Wherever you go upon the Earth the war-machines are there.
The sea is with the mariner wherever he may go;
Whatever kind of boat he sails the waves will always flow.
But he has built a battleship with guns on every side
That he may sink his enemies and drown them in the tide.
- -Heaven high and man below, the world created fair -
- -Wherever you go upon the sea the war-machines are there.
The stars are with the voyager wherever he may fly,
Whatever world he travels to beyond this planet's sky;
But he has built a missile range, and warheads weight his wings ....
And he can make a thousand suns annihilate all things.
- - Heaven high and man below, the world created fair -
- - Wherever you go across the sky the war-machines are there.
And Death is with the soldier wherever he may cry -
The poppyfield, the battlefield where bombs and bullets fly .....
Oh let us live, my love and I, beneath the sun and moon,
And never let the searing sky bring darkness at noon.
- - Heaven high and man below, the world created fair;
- - Wherever you go upon the Earth the war-machines are there;
- - Wherever you go upon the sea the war-machines are there;
- - Wherever you go across the sky the war-machines are there -
- - Wherever you go in any age - the war-machines are there.
