A city set upon a hill.

History spans the horizon, a thousand lives lived
In a city known for its cultural prose;
Rising like the Raj in colonial heat of Indian summers
The bread basket we call Melton Road;
Empire still vogues the cat walks as students create breath taking history;
To be future worn by royal feet, the new trend of British colony.
Imported culture is bright amongst ethnic hosts
A backdrop where all colours unite,
In bangra dances, rejoicing in urban sunshine,
Rained steps glide, grass root rhythms, dumlas,
Distant traffic, the hum, a heartbeat, a city set alight.
We longed for this moment as one longs for prosperity
In a troubled economic land; we longed for this moment
As one longs for our troops to return from Afghanistan;
The magazine now the centre of the landscapes changing universe,
Voicing echoes no longer hankering
For retribution for blood spilt way back when.
Negro spirituals dressed in kingdom garbs
Sway to the voice of the one true God,
Breathing His loving verses through their choral song;
Children wave flags above barriers of silver,
Greeting her majesty with floral bouquets,
The faithful few who witnessed her coronation
Stand steadfast amongst their grown children, blue rinses,
Old fashioned attire, the beat bobby,
A reminder of the good old days.
Time hasn’t changed her majesty,
Her regal presence still commands
Adoration and respect; after all these years
Her loyal subjects embrace her shore
The red the white and the black;
Her faithful husband a prince amongst princes
Constantly by her side
As the new breed of elegant royalty
Waits patiently in the wings
Like a retiring shadow in the mid day sun
Studying the brilliant light;
Revealing shades of things to come
Her husband fights the good fight;
A new era of royal millennial reign
Held in the grip of the media glare;
A united front proceeds on all sides
The people of Leicester smile broadly
Snap shot paged to be remembered and archived
for yet another day.
