Day 11 - Extract 2 from 'Sometimes Breaking My Heart: An Ode to Belinda Carlisle'

Queueing for the checkouts, stood behind
a touchy-feely couple, I examine
the girl's scabs. Each boyfriend-grasping hand
is burn-freckled, marked by all-too-human
cooking misadventures. Frogskin bruises,
one a-piece, sit cooling on her legs.
Because of these, her poster doll disguise's
incomplete. She's real beyond the rags.
Not you, my love! They keep you alien -
the botox now, before: the make-up team
and camera crew. Though flesh as anyone
I never see that side of you. The seam
of glittering abrasions was sealed off
and closed by 'Heaven is a Place on Earth'.
Men and women cannot get enough
of smoothness substituted for the truth.
But if the mask was jarred and some stray lesion,
like a sprung out nip, revealed itself,
would I reel like you're some werewolf
or would I want you more, sans the illusion?
