Glencolumcille
This hollow in the hills
Is as peaceful as heaven.
Only the call of the sea
And the answer of the wind disturbs
This gold and emerald stillness,
This glow of purple heather
Laced by the silver ribbon
Of the only road.
Long stones cluster
Where once a hero laid his head
On the welcoming grass,
Where he and his lover made their bed
And loved in their shelter
Until death came to claim them.
They cast an evening shadow
On the aged hill.
I, too, would turn to stone,
And cast my shadow
And sigh a moan
Each time the wind stirs my memory,
To remind me
I am still alone.
