The Dream
by James Wesley
Sun rays glistened off serene droplets of dew that clung desperately to slender blades of lush green grass. A songbird serenaded the countryside, somewhere off in the woods bordering the meadow, creating a sense of peace and serenity. Wind pushed hurriedly through the tall meadow grasses, quickly drying out the tears of morning, yet concealing the moist earth beneath them. A field mouse darted betwixt the sprigs of natural alfalfa, never stopping for more than a second to take in it’s restricted view. A pair of Whitetail deer leisurely strolled parallel to to the woodline, ready to quickly dart in and disappear at the first sign of danger. The house was a silent observer to natures’ morning routine, sitting perched atop the knoll and gazing out across the meadow. The individuals living, and at this hour sleeping inside the house were well protected by the sturdy walls and the high peaked roof of the house. Surrounding the house was a perimeter of bright spring flowers, tulips blossoming happily alongside daisies’ and chrysanthemums. A lazy barn cat swatted lazily at a persistent fly and longed for the peace of night to return once again. Somewhere off in the distance, a dog barked, and the old collie on the porch passively lifted his head and gazed in the general direction of the familiar disturbance. The house quietly observed all of this, too, and waited patiently for the occupants within it’s walls to awaken. And they did. In a flurry of bed sheets, warm water, soap, toothpaste, combs, brushes, milk, cereal, and clean clothes the family hurried about the house. The dew evaporated off the grass, and the songbird stopped mid-verse. The wind died down to a mere whisper. The field mouse stopped short and cowered, tucked up in the meadow grass, and the deer sprinted into the woods. The cat stretched and walked to it’s dish, awaiting it’s meal. The dog picked itself up and wagged its tail at the commotion inside. The family rushed from the house and into the family car, and the peace and serenity of the meadow was truly broken. The car rushed from the driveway, tires kicking up dust and polluting the air with foul exhaust. They were gone as quickly as they had came. And the house sat atop the hill and sighed a sigh only a house can sigh and relaxed as the meadow eased back into the peace and serenity for all to enjoy.

Very well written.
I loved the human quality you gave the house and that the family not only missed the natural world around them but of course polluted it. It was very descriptive and full of beautiful, early morning, spring imagery. I loved it! Bravo!
