May 1 , 1920

Dear Mums and Daddy

 

I thought you would like a lot of postcards of our journey, sent frequently, even though
not much space for writing on each one.

Here is the ship , the Grampian we are sailing on from Liverpool to Quebec. It is very large
and comfortable, with much entertainment in the evenings and good food. The journey will take 9 days, but the weather is fairly good, so we weren't seasick after the first day or two.Even though we are going second class, we have our own entrance hall, smoking and music rooms and sheltred prominade.

Yes, this is right after the war has finished, and Mark and Dick have been unable to find work in England. The elder Mr Day has died (suicid but I don't know if it was labelled as such at the time) and his will was proven in about March 1920. So my guess is that Una used her inheritance to fund their trip to Canada to see if they could find work. When they did, they suggested that Mark and Gwenllian bring their son, Peter, who was about 5, and Bammie, whose real name was Caroline Day out there. I can't find any details of when Dick and Una left England, but I found the ship list for the others, so know I have the dates right for them. And I know where they first went because I found an entry in someone's diary mentioning it. More about that later.

Hi Jean,

you don't know how good it is to be back reading your work.

I have some old family photos, but don't really know much about them, so it's nice to read an original letter from back in the day.
