Limiting

Perfectionism will only get you so far -
I know it is a trait of mine
To always try too hard
And never feel fulfilled;
I have run too fast before
When I did not truly know
What it was to walk,
And now I've learnt
To go more slow
And listen much more than I talk,
To stop charging ahead, reaching too far,
Jumping in at the deep end,
Hesitationless
And drowning in my own sweat
When I push myself too hard.

The secret is to hold back sometimes,
Regard what lies ahead
Think about the words before
They are already said,
And I know this limiting
Will make me feel trapped,
How I will hate to leave
The rest of my potential still untapped,
But sacrifices are the price
Paid in the currency of if-only-ing and saying
'Wouldn't it be nice
If......'
So I must sit back
If I wish
To last
And not burn out.
