There was no way he was going to make it. He backed slowly from the brink he was trembling ....actually the whole branch was shaking he chanced a look behind him. There was no going back now he had two choices and stay here and wait to be caught was definitely the least appealing. He sucked in a lungful of air squeezed his eyes shut and leaped from the branch.
He forced one eye open the ground was rushing towards him at an alarming speed, he reached out and grabbed a hanging vine which he nimbly scampered down. He was quickly covered by the tall grass and he ran flat out his heart was hammering in his chest. He could hear the pounding paws of pursuit behind him they were gaining he could feel the heat of the beasts rancid breath a whisker away from him. His prize was still cluched to his chest, the thought of the expectant little faces waiting for him gave him a last jolt of energy he urged himself into a last desperate sprint, launching himself into an elegant leap and dive into the concealed entrance to his home. He crouched in the darkness panting desperately, listening to his attackers rumble overhead shrieking in frusration at his escape. He blew out a long breath in relief.
He looked at the beautiful juicy grape in his paw, it had been worth it he could already hear little paws scuttling towards him. His twelve little mouslets surrounded him their tiny paws hugging him in welcome, Dad was home and breakfast was served! That should keep them busy until lunchtime he thought , then the second assault on the grape vines would commence, he slumped to the floor there had to be an easier way.
