Fire Alarm
I travel to work in the dark
I return when it is dark
This is your task, repeat until the sun has gone away
I will spread a thousand rounds of bread today
Tomorrow I will place a thousand lettuce leaves on cheese
The day after I may get to put on the very top
We have a break in the windowless canteen
Outside the sun is out but it may as well be raining
"Good weekend Sam?"
"I worked Saturday, couldn't quite fit everything into Sunday"
They notice the time, gone so quick, time is quicker in the canteen.
Spread slap, spread slap,
You can try and drift into your own little world
Not too much though because if the quality inspectors spot
Not enough margarine or a limp lettuce then you are in trouble.
A loud siren goes off, the fire alarm
All outside
Outside it is sunny, warm, the birds are singing, people chat in their
Queues, waiting, hoping that the roll call will take a long time.
Scents of deeply perfumed flowers drift past, is it a test or a real fire? The grass perspires, the sea is visible in the distance. Small blue butterflies flutter past.
