Most people are so boring, don’t you think?
So disappointing when they fall below,
Which they always do.
__________________You meet some fellow,
Find someone who gets you, someone in-sync
With all your hopes, your dreams.
__________________________It really stinks.
Old friends are worse; they’re all so bloody shallow.
No sticking power. All so keen to follow
Passing crazes.
____________Get me another drink,
There’s a good boy.
________________Me, I let ‘em all go.
No room in life for folk who hold you back,
Ride on coat-tails, get by on being slack.

Oh no, I’m between jobs at the mo’.
I’ve yet to find The Thing I want to do.

Every boss I ever worked for was a fool.

I agree, most people are so boring, not the abctales lot, having finally met some in real life, I hasten to add! This feels unfinished, the ending stops abruptly and I think it needs a bit more...

Hi Jennifer, It's very kind of you to comment. Have you read my other "Speed Daters" poems? They're on the theme of love and relationships, as though spoken by speed-daters introducing themselves in a limited time. Of course, they inevitably reveal their personality flaws, exposing the reasons why they've resorted to speed-dating at all. Looking at the others in the series, you might notice that they're all based around the traditional sonnet form (renaissance love poems, 14 lines, iambic pentameter, etc...) which I've subverted to reflect the trials of modern love. The woman in this poem will never find the "perfect" partner because all she sees are people's imperfections. It ends where it ends because it cannot go further: For reasons technical and contextual. The last line leaves us imagining - She believes herself superior to her bosses, yet lacks the confidence to be free of bosses; passive/aggressive maybe? And then the bell rings and we move on.
