bone and scar

bone and scar
of all the dark spaces,
in all the world.
i am lost inside a tunnel,
leading neither back,
nor on;
peopled with apparitions of memory,
hopes cosseted underfoot,
no longer gleamed
by the diminishing light.
walls leer close,
reminding there is little point,
in struggling,
for stuck, is stuck,
is stuck.
darker now, than ever
before, bones of lovers gone,
conspire to unbalance me;
bring me to the floor.
the only light, so fragile,
i risk extinguishing it
through my whispered reassurances.
lost. far from the reach of the moon,
that friendly face of childhood,
bruised, too soon.
old glory, no longer lights the way.
saving breath,
my mantra has become
desperately internal.
as deep underground,
i scrabble for love,
amidst bone and scar,
no longer able to believe,
i’ll find moonlight,
once more.
