gulls over Paris

church bells fall mute, having turned afternoon

into evening, and in the fade of the peal, the cry of gulls,

as they take to the sky. the sea stretched high over spires, before

the long, lazy plummet toward the Seine,

each calling from one to the next, like a ladder of souls

descending.
