Beat of a heart

How fast could you stop the dancing rain
Or capture the stormy wind
How fast could you compress the wild blue sea
Or have the most white shark finned
How quiet is the sound of an elephant’s pain
Or the cry of a soft blue seal
How quiet is the sound of a peacock’s wail
Or the sigh of a small green eel
How great is the voice of a human man
Or the force of his legs at sea
How great are the ways of a simple heart
When it just lets the animals be
Who said we had a right in this beautiful world
To make these animals kneel
Who said we could stick and stomp and kill
For our own hungry need
When we lie down, we take another’s breath
Breathe through others’ lungs
When we wake and pray and eat
We speak through others’ tongues
So who has figured out the world’s secrets
No one can alone
But together with everyone, we can be
Still and loud and strong
When you feel the beat of a heart
Leave it quite alone
Because before you know it, life will be
Gone; destroyed; blown
Speak in the tongue of a tiny fish
Or share the heart of a dove
And feel the pain, the joy, the tears
Just be- and feel the love
