Basil hears light footsteps behind the tall green walls of the labyrinth. He starts to run, turning and turning every corner of the maze until he reaches the heart of it.
Seated on a bench, Lieza is waiting for him.
'Hi Basil, did you enjoy the circus?'
She looks incredibly beautiful, with her long black hair in curls, spiraling around her shoulders.
'I want my key back...Did you bring it?'
Just when he was going to reply, Growl appears from one of the narrow paths.
'Look who's here!...Hi Basil! How's it going?'
He comes forward with a crooked smile on his face.Lieza, with a swift move grabs his arm. 'Well ? What about the key?'
Basil pushes her aside and runs to one of the paths. He hears the footsteps of his two enemies
coming closer. He begins to run faster. He turns to the left, then to the right, then left again...And then he sees the exit in front of him.
He goes out of the maze to a sombre wood. He runs among the trees, anguished and distressed, the key still in his hand. He stops and listen.
Silence...So he keeps moving on. After ten minutes walking without knowing where he was heading, he finds a medieval tower in ruins.
He walks through the withered wooden door. Inside is cool and dark. He sighs with relieve. A rest before continuing his way will make him
good.
In a dark corner there is a bench. He sits and leans his back on the wall.He closes his eyes. His mind wanders off, to past days when
he was living this stormy relationship with Lieza.
Venice. Il Lido and the white sand beach ,where they stroll every afternoon. Long walks
along the seaside, small white waves kissing their bare feet...
The piercing cry of a bird brings him back to reality. It's dark now, and it's getting cold. Basil stands up and goes to the doorway.Gray stormy clouds conceal the moon. He can barely see through the dust blown by gusts of furious winds from the west. The bird cries again and lightning turns the sky into a yellowish Hell, while the thunder roars the laughter of Lucifer.
All of a sudden, silence prevails. And the yellow sky is darkened by thousands of black butterflies with dark blue opalescent wings. Basil remains silent and looks from the threshold ,the flapping iridescent wings, wet and glossy from the raindrops that started to fall from the ominous dark clouds. Shivering, he sits again on the floor, closing his eyes...
A fresh magnolia scent wakes him up.
