THE WIZARD QUINTET PART 2 - DRAGON

With body strong and armoured scales,
A tail long and wings like sails,
With massive jaws and teeth like steel,
With dagger claws, a nightmare real.
In cavern deep the drake did lie
As if in sleep with lidded eye,
Of wealth untold he'd made his bed
On piled gold he laid his head.
Then like a shot, the dragon woke !
His blood was hot, his breath was smoke.
The starving beast now had to eat
He longed to feast on human meat.
As lightning flashed, he left his lair
As thunder crashed, he took to air.
Up, up he soared, as high as high
Like wind he roared 'cross darkening sky.
On mighty wings the dragon came
Where mortal kings had long held reign.
But rule of law he paid no heed
With tooth and claw he'd come to feed.
On castle keep his fury broke
As men from sleep to terror woke.
In dark despair they knelt as one
In fervent prayer that help would come.
Then hope was there in their great need
For in the air on his winged steed
The Wizard came, their prayers were met
From dragon flame he'd save them yet.
His staff he raised and held on high
And lightning blazed across the sky.
Fierce and deep the mage-fire burned
Now from the keep the dragon turned.
With fearsome force his tail lashed
From his winged horse the wizard crashed.
Those down below in horror screamed
Their hope brought low or so it seemed.
But to the fight the mage returned
With blinding light his magic burned.
In flame beset the dragon plunged
Thus doom he met, his life expunged.
Of body strong and armoured scales
Of tail long and wings like sails,
Just bones remain in crater deep
E'er since they've lain in blackened heap.
