QUIET

Foxes screaming
Brickwork settling
Woodwork creaking
House is breathing.
Partner snoring, or crying out
Drunken revellers
Having a shout.
Speeding cars,
Fighting cats
Prowling round, skulking about.
Any of which
May disturb the peace
And be the cause
For broken sleep.
So, to lay awake thinking of you.
Of the things we said
Or didn't do,
Mentally beating furrowed brow
Berating the facts
Of sleepless hours.
And when dawn light breaks
The seal of a new day.
From night forgotten and drifting away
Into sweet somnolence floating on high
Deep in sleep wished for hastily nigh.
To the moments and minutes of slumberous bliss
To the seconds within reach of The Sandman's kiss
Is all it takes for one jealous clock
And its alarming hell
To ruin the lot.
