"My life will never be the same."
"Don't be so melodramatic, no one will even notice."
"Ya think?"
"Well, no one will care, you are still you."
"Am I? Am I really? Because I don't feel like me. Hell, I don't look like me. So what's left?"
"Your sense of humor, your passion, your anger. Nothing has changed, not really."
As I sighed heavily the bandages tightened around my chest.
"But they are so.... white."
"Just tell them you fell in the lake. Look, if they are your friends, they'll see past the grime."
"But I'm a mummy for feck's sake. I'm supposed to scare the crap out of people. I look like a giant tic tac mint."
Fred took off his sunglasses, his own bandages crumbling in his hand as he reshaped his nose. Squinting at the snow blinding effect of my new look, he muttered hopefully, "You look... bigger."
I opened the door of the mummy jet-wash booth and said, "Well it's your turn now. Maybe it won't be so bad when there are two of us."
Fred shuffled backwards, hitching up the unraveling linen hanging down his thigh. "Um. I'm not sure white is my color. Mud brown and grease are much more my style."
"Oh no you don't, get back here."
Fred shuffled off, and I shuffled after him, dragging my dead leg behind, gnashing my teeth and growling.
"See?" Fred's muffled voice drifted on the breeze. "Nothing has really changed!"
