The Funeral

Blue and green hues washing over me
I sit in stony silence
Reflecting on your life
All the joy and beauty you brought
To each new passing day
I see dust spiraling in the shaft of sunlight
I feel stifled from the heat
Asphyxiated by my grief
I can hear the sound of paper fans
I am too transfixed to even move
I think of all you have meant to me
How you changed my life forever
I know that nothing any preacher says
Or anyone delivering a eulogy
Can extol all the praise you should receive
Services having ended
We file out in a sea of black
Our hearts heavy
Knowing our memories
And all that you taught us
To be the greatest gift you left behind
