I Have a Dream

I had a dream. I would make the world a better place.
Soothe every weeping child, bear every bitter failure.
Take the world upon my naïve shoulders with an innocent smile
And expect nothing but sweet satisfaction in return.
Like every young fool, I felt I was a rising sun,
Soon to bring cherished colour to a fading world.
But now I see I am the moon, that comes and goes,
Waxing and waning, never still, never constant.
But less than the moon, for the moon rules the nights
And all I can claim is my steadfast heart.
For what use is a strong heart or good intentions?
Good intentions lie forgotten under hungry ambition.
And every hope for a brighter sunrise has slipped away
As insignificant as drifting blossom.
A pure and beautiful dream for sure,
But now just a dream, neglected and forgotten.
I lie awake, watching the sunlight. I have no dreams,
No sweet hope of glory, of honour.
My dream is but a flower, glorious in spring,
Now faded to a bitter memory.
