″I'll never let go, Jack. I promise.″
Those words were the last thing she said to him as she lowered his lifeless body into the ocean. She slid of the debris, gasping at the temperature of the water. Rose swam over to the dead officer. She pulled the whistle from his mouth and put it to hers. She blew as hard as she could, the sound echoing in her ears. ″Come about!″yelled Officer Lowe. The rescue boat was coming closer. ″I see her! Come on now, lads! Row faster. Put your backs into it!″
The men in the boat looked at her in shock. Lowe glared at them. ″Well dont just stare at her lads!″
Lowe pulled her nearer. She felt strong arms around her and then she was staring into the kind eyes of her rescuer. Blankets were wrapped round her and Lowe lay her down gently. ″You'll be alright love. Do you need another blanket?″
Rose shook her head. The only thing she needed was Jack but of course she couldn't have him. He smiled reassuringly and lit a green flare, signalling for a rescue ship. She couldn't sleep, no matter how much her body wanted to. Her mind was busy, thinking of as many memory's of Jack as possible, and her heart was breaking. Jack had blonde hair and blue eyes. Officer Lowe had dark hair and eyes. She mentally slapped herself. It was cruel, comparing Jack to a man she had just met. Officer Lowe was kind though and that's what she liked about him. He treated her as if she was the only survivor he had rescued. Probally because she was a woman. The only woman to be rescued. He'd wanted to keep searching, she knew Lowe was hurting. He didn't want to believe that there was no one else. But he could see the men in his boat were tired and he needed to get the survivors into the warm. The pain in his eyes as he gave the orders to turn back. But he couldn't have been hurting as much as Rose was. She had lost him, and the sea had claimed him. Just like the thousands that perished in the icy waters.
