"Drugs, thieves, pimps, pushers, divorce, dysfunctional families, rape, murder, violence, crime, poor education, ever greater inequality, pollution, gang warfare; all are rife in this city. A vote for Mckenzie is a vote to stop all this. I guarantee you, they will be no more. Vote for the voice of reason, vote Mckenzie.
Mary was much like everyone else in the city. She bore the Motor Neuro Processor on her head, which sat on the crown of her skull, its workings went deep within her brain. The MNP was acclaimed as 'a blessing for all peace loving members of civilsed society'. It was a complex and great feat of engineering but, simply put, it controlled unruly and destructive thoughts and banished them as Mckenzie put it; 'to where they belong, the primitive past'.
As a child Mary was always satisfied with what she was given and she was eternally greatful to Mckenzie.
'Before there was just disorder. Then out of the chaos came Mckenzie, who brought forth to the city order and peace. He blessed each member of this new found land with the MNP, which he placed upon their heads. Praise be to Mckenzie, to Mckenzie be praise, the living God on earth'.
Marys education was co-ordinated with her developement, as she developed mentally she was fed more knowledge and skills through an 'experience and thought regulator'. Schools were a part of the past, unheard of under Mckenzies skies. 'The future lies within the regulators', spoke Mckenzie; 'they are the teachers of the ultimate truth'.
At first the MNPs were nothing more than clever electrical stunning instruments. They recognised anti social behaviour and would disable the wearer with an electric shock when an act of crime was being commited. As technology developed it was discovered that the processors could be used not only for recognition of thought patterns but for control of them as well. At first they were still used exclusively on criminals, through trial and error the scientists developed them until the ultimate creation was born; MNP model 102. This was to be planted on the skull of every woman man and child, they voted for it, they wanted it.
"I say to those who slander me a control freak only this. If a control freak is someone who wants peace and proserity beset on the people of this then I stand guilty as charged; a control freak. There is no reason to be afraid of the world I offer you people. The Motor Neuro Processor is just like the pill you take to cure a headache, this city is diseased, I offer you the cure. Nothing more, nothing less".
The people of the city were not permitted to leave it. The city met all their needs. It was not a prison for them because they were content but whenever they did question what was beyond the walls they were reminded of the words spoken by Mckenzie. He said 'outside the cities lies the untamed world, the chaos and darkness from which I have saved you. Any creatures that live beyond the wall are savage, and will kill for the lust of blood and death'.
In the city they knew that people lived outside the city walls, but they were not regarded as human beings, they were considered more lowly than household pets. They were referred to in conversation as 'the wolves'.
