There is confusion,
so I've been told,
among members
of this household.

Maybe it's because
I'm gentle and tender
that people assume
I'm of the female gender.

I'm not confused;
I am certain that
there is no doubt
I am a boy, and yet

the family wait
to hear from the vet
what is the sex
of their new pet.

My name is now Louis,
whereas it was Lucy
and the new moniker
may sound goosey 

I don't really mind
what I am called
but should they say 'Oi, you!
I'd be appalled.

Aw Luigi :0) He looks so soft! Though does look like a tom, to me. It seems a tradition for you to choose cat names associated with Mountbatten?

He is actually my daughter's kitten, Di, and she took it for granted that it was a girl, having been so informed by her friend. It's not the first time this has happened: my previous cat, Toby, had been named Sophie in the mistaken belief that he was female.
The name Louis was not chosen because of Mountbatten but because it sounded very similar to Lucy. 
Coincidentally, it is the English translation of my name (Luigi).

Apologies for being loopy! Was remembering wrongly that you had a cat called Monty, very sorry! A very kind lady here has tamed a cat who used to live in the carpark,   whom she has called ZaZa, convinced is female, and spoils like anything, and we are convinced is a very large tom :0)

No Monty in our menagerie, Di. Other felines involved in our life were named Oedipus, Psyche, Whisky, Toby and Oscar, a neighbour's cat we had to rescue from the roof. smiley

Yes, Claudine, we live fairly neat to this daughter. My other daughter, who is also a cat lover, is farther away in Bath but her cat is very shy and wary of strangers.

What an adorable kitteni. You have written an account of one of our kittens we called Misty, we always thought this bundle of joy was a he, but turned out to be a she. We kept the name, as luckily it was perfect for a male or female. 

It's nice to be able to read a poem from the perspective of the kitten. Nice one Luigi.

It is always advisable to choose a neutral name for a pet just in case the gender is unknown at first. Unfortunately, I learned the lesson after the event and my daughter followed in my footsteps.
So pleased you liked this poem. It's definitely aimed at cat lovers.

Not a cat person myself but I agree this one is adorable. I inhereted my mother's cat Sofia but she adopted me long ago already. Yes that means no birds no budgies no parrots no real dogs no hamsters no aquarium... And no pests rats and mice at least.

Yes I know you need a vet to tell the gender don't know what the problem is it is important we've got more than enough "wild" cats. They can be a big problem and some people feed them.

You are right, Tom, you have to be a cat lover because it restricts your choice of other pets that might not be friendly but I have heard of cats and dogs, and even mice, living together quite happily.
I agree that the spread of wild cats must be limited and that's where the vet comes in.
