The End Is Nigh

The man with the sandwich-board said
that the end of the world was nigh.
We laughed and scoffed at this bloke
who clearly was losing his marbles,
befuddled by alcohol and drugs
- cheap plonk, amphetamine, coke.
What a dope! As if we would
give up hope on our planet's resilience.
How long had the earth survived?
Millions and billions of years.
Then the scientists spoke up:
they warned us of melting icecaps,
of greenhouse gas and climate change.
Told us that man burns huge amounts
of fossil fuels and cuts down forests
that naturally absorb carbon dioxide from the air.
Nature joined in with tsunami, earthquakes
and volcanic eruptions to disrupt the eco system.
(As if the El Niño wasn’t enough to affect it.)
And yet mankind stood passive; did nothing
to prevent a catastrophe and a cataclysm.
Meekly accepting that the end was inevitable
they began the final countdown to oblivion.

Dinosaurs became extinct
Dinosaurs became extinct about 65 million years ago...
Perhaps, one day, when (and if) a more advanced/intelligent being evolves from our ashes, it will be written in their history books that "dinosaurs became extinct about 135 million years ago, and humans about 65 million years thereafter..."
Very good poem!!!

Nice one... I've seen that
Nice one... I've seen that guy Luigi .... at Penn State University... He doesn't do drugs, he's Amish
It's a message we all should take notice of alright... but it's just so cold down here atm, I think I'll put another log on the fire and read a book.

Nope... I'm certainly not
Nope... I'm certainly not going to tell a porkie like that one Luigi.. he was just there at the game (Grid-Iron). Actually, the 'book' is a local rag on the demise of NZ's West Coast's mining community since the Pike River Mine disaster, (in which 29 coal miners perished and as yet have not been recovered) and the plummeting of world coal prices. Parallel's to what has occured in Wales... So you're right on the button my friend. I guess in many respects we have that Amish guy (and your bloke) to thank for helping to change our perspectives. Cheers Luigi..... Rob
