We wanted to forget doom and gloom
so we decided to have a slap-up meal.
Not in a restaurant but the dining room.
For this we set about with a great zeal.
Made sure we had a big enough table
so that everyone had sufficient space,
checked that we were all fit and able
and told all assembled not to embrace.
Guests could only wave and air kiss
to demonstrate friendship or affection.
It was a rule that no one could dismiss
as it was a prerequisite for disinfection.
We maintained one metre of distance
between each person who was seated
and in so doing proved our consistence;
to everybody's credit, no one cheated.
To start with, only thirteen were there,
which some believed to be bad luck.
It was obvious we had an empty chair
and therefore our planning was stuck.
We had a brainstorm to find a solution.
At a pinch we could invite Nathaniel
who could be a last minute substitution.
He is our dear host's Clumber spaniel.

Every occasion should have
Every occasion should have its accompanying dog. I hope Nathaniel has good table manners!
