Today it's my birthday
(I am eighty-four)
and I know that soon
a knock at the door

will announce that
the postman is here
delivering the news
that I like to hear.

There will be a card
meant to be funny,
showing an old man
with a Playboy bunny,

while others will refer
to my advanced years,
wish me good health,
send kisses and cheers

which will bring about
a few secret tears.
Many friends will say
not to have any fears

and that my days
are not yet numbered;
that I have a chance
to reach one hundred.

My daughters will be
unanimous and claim
that I am a super dad
and proud of my name.

My young grandson,
a Lowry's copycat,
will draw for his nonno
a round face with a hat.

He will sign his artwork
with his name - James -
give it to me and return
to his favourite games.

But the first wishes I got
were those of my wife
with whom I am happy
to be sharing this life.

As always it is lovely to read your kind words, Jenny. 
An old man asked about his longetivity replied: "I wake up and I am still breathing". It is the same in my case and hope it carries on. I will still let you suffer with my 'literary' efforts (whether cherried or not) as writing is one of my hobbes.

No, not too snowy today where I live and despite the weather being unstable I had a very satisfying day. 
Not only I received an avalanche of warm wishes, I also achieved a minor success by sharing third place in the Society of Classical Poets poetry contest for translating the poem “Alla Sera” by Ugo Foscolo* from Italian into English. Tentatively scheduled to be published on their website in March.

And the cherry on the cake is the one awarded for this, Many thanks. yes Luigi x

wow Luigi, I had thought you were 50 - 60,  sharp wit and great rhymes, though now I understand how you write poems so warm and full of wisdom as this one, also

Hello Di, it is said the wisdom comes with old age but I think that experience rather than age is what makes a person more discerning.
I believe that one is as old as he feels and I never think of myself as a senior citizen.
You were nearer to guessing my age than my five-year old grandson who when asked by my daughter how old he thought I was replied: 22. Bless hin; I like him much better now.
Anyway, enough about me. Thanks for your birthday wish.
