First Steps

I heard that we are making the first steps
to leave behind the turmoil and trouble
that everyone has experienced so far
from isolating or being part of a bubble.
 
Encouraging signs are being perceived
that our life will very soon start afresh;
that it won't be long before we travel
to faraway places like Bangladesh.
 
In the meantime tentative moves
are being made to re-open schools
to test toddlers' immunity to Covid
while still observing the safety rules.
 
This is the advent of new beginnings,
of regeneration and renewed hope
and we're determined that it shall
halt the slide of a slippery slope.
 
We ought to be allowed to celebrate,
if not with bubbly, with a glass of wine
but have been told to hold our horses
and to still follow the guidelines.
 
Perhaps it will be the end of March,
although we don't know which day,
when the restaurants open their doors,
but Murphy's law says it'll be May.
 
We have to be glad there's a vaccine
and must be grateful for small mercies
but all our thanks go to the doctors
and to the caring and qualified nurses.
