A Ghostly Apparition

It was still quite dark,
when I heard a knock
and the dog bark.
I looked at the clock.

The time: three-fifteen.
In the unlit bedroom
nothing could be seen;
I could sense doom.

I put on the light
and by the bedpost
I caught sight
of a female ghost.

She gave me a fright.
“I am your widow”,
she said with delight,
then flew out the window.

Right away I tried
getting out of bed
to see if I'd died
and found I was dead.

It was still quite dark,
the situation serious,
it was not a lark.
I was really furious.

I shouldn't have eaten
the meals she prepared;
I had been a cretin
to think that she cared.

Certainly a salutary lesson, Jane. Yours is sound advice. Our forebearers had the right idea when they employed food tasters.
