His First Noel

Preparations have begun
for the coming festivities;
it will be the first Noel
for our little grandson.

Although our dear boy
doesn’t know the old man,
a stuffed Father Christmas
is his latest soft toy.

I wonder if he will
be scared by this stranger,
who bellows “Ho ho ho”,
or if he’ll stand still

in rapt amazement
and wonder why
this fellow is showing
so much merriment.

Will he spot the accent
of his foreign granddad
or will he be foxed
by this man old and bent?

This fat guy’s ploy
won’t spoil the enjoyment;
with presents galore
he’ll be filled with joy.

I know what you mean, Jenny. The feelings that I felt for my own daughters when they were little have now been transferred to the little man, but still I retain memories of how they were and behaved at the same age.

Have a special Christmas with your little one. I was having a baby last Christmas Day. That put the kibosh on Christmas lunch, that's for sure.

He is often awake all night and strong as a baby bison, thanks Luigi. Nearly walking. Impossibly sweet, utterly impish. Bites guest's ankles as he crawls past them. Everyone leaves with blue bruises needing their tetanus jab. Ha! Aren't they precious.

Precious they are, Ray. At the end of his visits I feel smiley but also utterly exhausted.
