Dear friends, I have to confess
that as far as gastronomy goes
I’m completely devoid of prowess.

I tried plenty of dishes, when young,
some too spicy and others bland
but all welcome to my eager tongue.

The tastes were so many and diverse
- each one with a pleasing flavour -
that they’ve to be praised in verse.

I sampled them locally at first,
then I learnt that I had to travel
to sate my unquenchable thirst.

With Italian I knew where I stood;
yet I explored a fare more exotic
and found others to be just as good.

I went to Indian and Chinese venues
and later on I was glad to discover
a raw passion for a Japanese menu.

I believed I’d experienced the lot,
French, Mexican, Spanish and Thai
but in Lancashire I savoured a hotpot.
