If Music Be the Food of Love

I often listen to the music of J.S. Bach,
but less frequently to that of Offenbach.
I believe that very few can hold a candle
to that great composer Frideric Handel.
I also know that some don’t give a fig
for the one whose first name is Ludwig.
Yet one would have to be a philistine
to dislike Beethoven’s Number Nine,
-the symphony that we call the ‘Choral’-
an opinion that I’d pronounce immoral.
Another great that I would add to my list
is, you might have guessed, Franz Liszt.
By now, you should have got my measure:
that music is what above all I treasure.
I am in awe of conductors and their baton,
"if music be the food of love, play on".

You are restoring my faith, Bee. I thought that this would sink like a few have of late.
This ditty is a sort of joke. It started with the play on words between (often) Bach and Offenbach. To turn it into a musical 'scherzo' seemed the obvious thing to do. I had fun in writing it. Once again I see that we share a sense of humour.  Thanks for your lovely comment.

Well done, again, Luigi.
When growing up, my parents had just a few records once they'd managed to get a little radiogram (post war) - you had to trick it if you wanted to play 78s as it tended to switch off before it could switch on, so you had to tip it on its side to get them going. I loved those few, but was slow getting into much more until my youngest son had such a passion for music combined with some other problems, that I learned more with him! Rhiannon

Hi Rhiannon. Tastes in music can change with age. In my teens I liked jazz and had a vast collection of records. I particularly remembered the 45s which had a big hole in the middle and required an adaptor to make them interchangeable with the 78s. There was a brief interval when the Beatles were all the rage but it was a passing phase.As I grew up I acquired a taste for classical music which has lasted until the present day.
