This Morning

This morning
I woke up at eight
which, for me,
is a bit late.

I was surprised
by what I saw:
the garden was
a carpet of snow.

Although I am
a frail old man,
I wished to build
a snowman.

Ir would weigh
nearly a ton
and I'd show it
to my grandson.

A carrot is used,
as he well knows,
for the snowman's
pointed nose.

He would suggest
a scarf and a hat
and then tell me
to leave it at that.

He is a good boy
and wouldn't shatter
my dream by saying
I'm as mad as a hatter.

I take it this is autobiography of now, Luigi. We haven't any snow, had very few flakes at all over the last week. Is it your photo? Grandchildren do like to know their Grandads, and Grans can still understand the simple delights of life like them! Rhiannon

Hi Rhiannon. Yes, it happened during the night, I suppose, because this morning the garden had a pristine layer of snow. As soon as I saw it I thought that my grandson would be racing out to build a snowman.

Our most recent fall brought enough to build not just a man but the entire population of China from snow, but we didn't bother because it was just too deep and too cold and a bit dangerous for folks of our age.

I stayed in and read poetry instead, and yours is very good by the way.

Dear Jenny, as soon as I looked out of the window this morning, this little ditty took shape and developed on the spot. Childhood memories must have been the inspiration.

How lovely that your grandson is close by :0) He will be very happy to have the whole of your garden as his canvas, and the snowman will be close by for you to observe creation through the window, without getting frozen! Hope you are staying warm, it sounds very Wintry where you are

It is very wintry at the moment, Di. We have entered a period of severe cold weather. I am keeping truly warm despite the rocketing cost of energy. roll on Spring, I say.

It is pretty wonderful to wake up to a blanket of snow isn't it? Like magic - unless you have things to do that day, or places to be, or a car to de-ice - but nevertheless, that wonderful first glimpse, and as you say, the idea of a snowman. I hope your grandson has a wonderful time in it while you watch from your expensively warmed house Luigi!

I'm told he wanted to rush out to play with the snow while still in his pajamas. I don't think that Louie, the cat, was as eager as the young master. laugh
