No Changing Of The Guard

The decision that had been made
was to celebrate the new decade
that would start in twenty-twenty
and bring forth an age of plenty.

By tradition, since records began
a New Year replaced the old one.
At the year-end, past midnight,
very peacefully, without a fight,

Old Father Time would give way
to a young one, on the next day.
But now, and it seems strange,
we are told there was a change.

They looked hard for a new bod,
couldn't find one, which was odd.
Many apprentices had been hired
but all of them were later fired.

Not one was suited for that role
and that left an enormous hole.
The handover couldn't be made,
the retirement had to be delayed.

Old Father Time got short shrift
and he had to do a double shift.
That's why my calendar states
that it will keep the '19 dates.
