Santa's Nightmare

Santa had heard many jokes but the last one
about his workforce having to Elf-isolate
because of a positive test, had been overdone;
he was unamused and somewhat desolate.
He had a deadline to meet and did not tolerate
frivolity from his workshop operatives
the majority of whom always pulled their weight
and of whom he spoke with lavish superlatives.
This year it seemed it could be a disaster,
his herd of reindeer decimated by Covid.
Those who were fit would have to run faster,
the young ones more than the veteran Cupid.
It was bad but there was still hope
that the epidemic would not spread
and Father Christmas would be able to cope
ensuring the shipments did go ahead.
It had been worse in two-thousand-and-three:
the overladen sleigh went out of control,
it somersaulted and bumped into a Christmas tree
soon after they had left the North Pole.
The presents scattered all over the ground
with mismatched labels and wrong addresses
so some boys, in the morning, found
they got Barbie dolls with blond tresses
whereas girls discovered that in their stocking
there was Action Man and Monster Truck.
The situation was truly shocking
and all the kids were thunderstruck
but it suited both the girls and the boys
to see how much pleasure could be got
by playing with each other's toys
and they found out it was quite a lot.
The mix-up might have caused resentment
but it generated a great deal of jollity
which produced lasting contentment
that symbolised the age of equality.
