Spilling the Beans

I remember a time
when a tin
of baked beans
could be bought
for 5p.

That suited me.

I cannot claim
to have eaten caviar
but I can boast
that my brain power
has been boosted
by beans on toast.

But I'm not alone.

Many students
in bedsits
throughout the land
had to subsist
on that diet.

But kept it quiet.

Not having a bean
was no crime but
it wouldn't have
been good for their cred
if they had said
that they fed
on baked haricots.

It may also be an ill wind.

It can be assumed
that if too many beans
are consumed
the presence
of flatulence
cannot be avoided.

The danger
for an aspiring musician
is that instead
of becoming a flautist
he will perform
as a flatulist.
