His response to the general’s calls
is to wave A Farewell to Arms.
Leaves the war zone and flees
Across the River and into the Trees.
And while he runs he’s asking why
and For Whom the Bell Tolls.
He’s witnessed Death in the Afternoon,
in the small hours of a moonless night,
in the morning when The Sun Also Rises
and what seemed a dream or a nightmare
is real and True at First Light.
It has been The Dangerous Summer
to be followed by a perilous winter;
To Have and Have Not proper food
will be crucial to peoples’ survival.
Much better to desert these shores
and go in search of The Garden of Eden.
It will represent A Moveable Feast
for a tormented migratory bird.
