The Romans had a name for Sicily,
they called that island Trinacria.
Three legs in rotational symmetry
with the Medusa's face in the middle
and three wheat ears, is the symbol
that's shown on that region's flag.
The emblem goes back to antiquity;
it is depicted on silver coins minted
in Syracuse in the fourth century BC.
It is meant, we are told, to represent
the island's three promontories,
Peloro, Capo Passero and Lilibeo.
Foreign invaders dominated this land
for many centuries and tribulations
is what the suffering islanders got.
Nowadays Sicily's sunny, dry climate,
history, architecture and cuisine
attract tourists to the beautiful spots
of Taormina, Catania and Ragusa.
And the restless Mount Etna volcano
also known by the name Montebello
is the overlord of this unique place.

Fascinating, I enjoyed reading. Foreign invaders, well, I suppose tourists don't bring arms and tend to leave, so that's an improvement. Rachel x
