Into the Void

Do not panic, as everything is well
for all the sinners among the devout;
even the pontiff is expressing doubt
about the existence of a fiery  hell.
 
Since Dante said to abandon hope
as we descend into the underworld
we’e always taken him at his word
but we’ve a dictum by the new pope.
 
He’s been cited to have made it clear
that for miscreants who don’t repent
it does not involve eternal torment,
but upon death they just disappear.
 
 
This is what one reads in the press.
To the believers in just punishment
that view is seen with astonishment
and it's bound to cause them distress.

They are not mutually exclusive, Mick, and anyway he hasn't pronounced on heaven.
